Munched on: 24 January 2014 | Saturday
We arrived at 7:30pm and waited 25-30 minutes for a seat. This was the outlet at JEM.
Here's what we ordered!
Pictured Above: Chawanmushi (S$4.30)
According to the menu at Sushi Tei, this is a "steamed egg custard". Other than the one lonely piece of mushroom, I found bits of crabmeat, ginko nuts and chicken (or pork, I can't tell). It was somehow sweet and savory. Yummy!

Pictured Above: Zuwai Gani Chawanmushi (S$6.80)
And this, according to the menu, is a "zuwai crab sauce on steamed egg custard".
So after some Googling, I found that "zuwai" is talking about a snow crab. Therefore, the Zuwai Gani Chawanmushi is a more tender and tastier version of the regular Chawanmushi!
To me, it just tastes sweeter than the regular Chawanmushi. Guess I don't have a sensitive palate!

Pictured Above: Kani Tappuri Salad (S$11.80)
I opted for the "Sushi Tei sauce", which is some thick orange lump (seen in the picture below. It comes in a separate bowl so you can add in as much or as little as you'd like! The so-called orange lump tasted a little sour, but added a punch to the salad which I enjoyed.

Although this salad has a great deal going on with crab meat, crab flake, avocado, capsicums/bell peppers, carrots, lettuce and cucumber, all flavours go so well with each other. An addictive dish indeed!
Pictured Above: Kagoshima Pork Sanshoku Vege Roll (S$9.00)
Wrapped in succulent Japanese pork are carrots, bell peppers and Golden Enoki Mushrooms (or Enoitake). Unlike the previous dishes so far, this is more on the savory side. The vegetables give a satisfying crunch to each bite.

Pictured Above: Hotate Miso Mayo/Mentai Mayo (S$9.80)
Needless to say, this beats the ones that I DIY at home, hands down! The scallop was grilled to juicy, chewy perfection, with a generous amount of mentai mayonnaise.

| (Mentai mayonnaise is cod roe or miso, and mayonnaise sauce, then usually torched lightly for a singed taste.) | |
Pictured above: Kaki Mentai Mayo Roll (S$9.60)
Deep fried oyster- delectable! No fishy smell, no rubber to chew through.
Excessive mentai mayonnaise- I scraped off half. The taste overpowered all else. I could taste nothing but mentai mayo.

This is a little pricier, but once it arrives, you'd know that you really get what you pay for!

As you can see below, the king prawn in the roll was thick and succulent, with tender eel and (what seems like really fresh) avocado on top.
Matcha Nama Chocolate Ice Cream (S$5.00)
Other than the adorable presentation of little barrels of matcha ice cream, I was surprised by how well the sweet chocolate complemented the more "herb-ish" matcha!
I was already stuffed with all the food I had ordered, so a sweet dessert would've been unappealing. Instead, this turned out semi-sweet, and dare I say, almost refreshes my palate!

| Btw, did you know that the bright green colour of this matcha is indicative of good quality? The brighter the green, the better it is! | |
